What is a filling?
A filling repairs a tooth that has a hole (cavity) from decay, or a small chip or crack. Your dentist removes the damaged part and fills the space to rebuild the tooth’s shape.
What types of filling do you offer?
We offer two types:
- Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite or aesthetic restorations. They are matched to the shade of your tooth.
- Amalgam fillings, a silver-coloured metal mix that has been used in dentistry for many years.
Which one suits you depends on where the tooth is, how big the filling needs to be and what you prefer. Ask your dentist about the pros and cons of each for your tooth.
Do I need a filling?
You may if you have a cavity, a small break, or an old filling that has worn or cracked. Signs include sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold food, a rough edge you can feel with your tongue, or food catching between teeth.
Some cavities cause no signs at all and are found at a check-up.
What happens during a filling?
- Your dentist checks the tooth and may take an X-ray.
- You agree on the type of filling, and they tell you the cost.
- The area is usually numbed with a local anaesthetic.
- The decay or damaged part is removed.
- The tooth is filled. A tooth-coloured filling is built up in layers, each one set with a blue light.
- The filling is shaped and polished, and your bite is checked.
How long does a filling take?
A filling usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes in one visit. Larger fillings, or several at once, can take longer or need another visit. These are estimates; the time may vary after your dentist assesses your needs.
If you had a local anaesthetic, the numbness usually wears off within a few hours. Until then, take care not to bite your cheek or lip, and avoid hot drinks.
Is it normal for the tooth to feel sensitive afterwards?
Yes, some sensitivity for a few days is common. If it gets worse or lasts longer, or your bite feels high, WhatsApp or call your clinic.
How long does a filling last?
It depends on the size of the filling, where it is in your mouth and how you look after your teeth. Fillings can wear, chip or leak over time, and your dentist checks them at your check-ups.
Does CHAS cover fillings?
Yes. Fillings are among the dental services CHAS subsidises for CHAS Blue, CHAS Orange, Merdeka Generation and Pioneer Generation cardholders, at clinics that take part. Limits apply. See the CHAS website for details.
All three of our clinics take part in CHAS.
How much does a filling cost?
It depends on the size of the filling and the material. Your dentist tells you the cost before starting, and you can also ask when you book.
How do I book?
