Check-ups, cleaning and whitening

Check-ups and cleaning

Dental check-ups, scaling and polishing, and digital X-rays when needed, for adults and children at our clinics in Ang Mo Kio and Clementi.

What happens at a dental check-up?

Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and the rest of your mouth, then tells you what they found. Finding a problem early often means simpler treatment.

At a check-up, your dentist will:

  1. ask about your health, any medicines you take and anything that is bothering you
  2. check your teeth, gums, tongue and the inside of your cheeks
  3. take X-rays if they are needed, and tell you why first
  4. tell you what they found and, if you need treatment, explain your options and the cost

You do not have to decide on any treatment that day.

What is scaling and polishing?

It is a clean at the clinic. Scaling removes tartar, the hard deposit that brushing cannot shift. Polishing smooths the teeth and lifts some surface stains.

It is often done at the same visit as your check-up.

Why might I need dental X-rays?

X-rays show what cannot be seen by looking, such as decay between teeth, problems under a filling or changes in the bone around the teeth. We use digital X-rays.

You will not need them at every visit. Whether you do depends on your teeth and your dental history. If you are pregnant or might be, say so before any X-ray is taken.

Do I need a check-up if nothing hurts?

Yes. Many dental problems do not hurt until they are quite far along, so check-ups are worth having for adults and children even when nothing feels wrong.

A check-up is also the place to start if something is bothering you, such as a sensitive tooth or a chipped filling.

How often should I have a check-up?

Many people come every 6 to 12 months. We will suggest how often to come back, based on your teeth and gums.

How long does the visit take?

A check-up with scaling and polishing usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes in one visit. This is an estimate; the time may vary after your dentist assesses your needs.

Does scaling hurt?

It can feel scratchy, and sensitive teeth may twinge. If your gums are inflamed, they may bleed a little.

If you would like a break at any point, raise your hand and your dentist will stop.

My gums bleed when I brush. Should I come in?

Yes. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease. Start with a check-up and clean, and your dentist will tell you what to do next.

Does CHAS cover check-ups and scaling?

Yes. CHAS subsidises both for CHAS Blue, CHAS Orange, Merdeka Generation and Pioneer Generation cardholders, at clinics that take part in the scheme. Yearly limits apply. The CHAS website lists what is covered.

All three of our clinics take part in CHAS.

How much does a check-up cost?

It depends on what is done at the visit, for example whether you need X-rays. You can ask about the cost when you book. If your dentist then suggests other treatment, they tell you its cost before it starts.

How do I book?

WhatsApp or call the clinic nearest you: Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, Ang Mo Kio (Central) or Clementi. Each clinic’s numbers are on our clinics page, or you can send a booking request.

If you are booking for a child, a parent or guardian should come along.
