What are braces and clear aligners?
They are two ways to straighten teeth. Both use light, steady pressure to move teeth into a new position over time.
- Metal braces have small metal brackets fixed to the teeth, joined by a wire.
- Self-ligating braces, such as Damon braces, hold the wire with a built-in clip instead of small elastic ties.
- Ceramic braces work like metal braces but use tooth-coloured brackets.
- Clear aligners, sometimes called invisible braces, are a series of thin, clear plastic trays. Each one moves your teeth a little, and you change to the next on a schedule your dentist sets. Invisalign is one brand. You can take them out to eat and brush.
For some young children, early treatment (interceptive orthodontics) can help guide the growth of the jaws.
Who can have orthodontic treatment?
Children, teenagers and adults with teeth that are crowded, gapped or crooked, or a bite that does not meet well.
Not every option suits every case. We check your teeth and jaws first, then tell you which options could work for you.

How does treatment work, from consultation to retainers?
- Consultation. Your dentist examines your teeth, jaws and bite, and asks what you would like to change.
- Records. X-rays, photos of your teeth, and moulds or a scan are taken.
- Plan. You go through the options, how long treatment may take and the cost.
- Fitting. Braces are fitted to your teeth, or you receive your first aligners.
- Adjustments. You come back regularly to check progress, have the braces adjusted or collect new aligners.
- Retainers. When treatment ends, you wear retainers to help keep your teeth in their new position.
How long will I need braces or aligners?
Often one to two years or more, depending on how far your teeth need to move. During treatment, visits are usually every few weeks. A first orthodontic consultation usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. This is an estimate; the consultation time may vary after your dentist assesses your needs.
When should my child’s bite be checked?
At their routine check-ups. The dentist looks at your child’s bite and tells you if an orthodontic assessment would help. Some problems are easier to manage while the jaws are still growing.
Will braces or aligners be sore?
Often, for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, or after you change to a new set of aligners. Brackets can also rub at first. We will show you how to manage this.
Do I need to wear retainers?
Yes. Without them, teeth can move back after treatment. Your dentist will tell you how to wear your retainers and for how long.
Does CHAS cover braces?
No. Braces and aligners are not among the dental services CHAS subsidises. The CHAS website lists what is covered.
How much do braces or aligners cost?
It depends on the type of brace or aligner and how long your treatment takes. Before you start, you will know the cost of the whole course of treatment and what it includes. You can also ask when you book.
